Antique Christmas Cards by Samuel L. Schmucker

Nobody knows how many Christmas cards were designed by Samuel Loren Schmucker. We will present a few dozen examples of supposedly his work, but we can't say for sure. Still, they provide a nice view of Christmas celebrations a century or more ago. These vintage Christmas postcards are divided into sections roughly according to the chosen themes and used designs. All of them were published by John Winsch around 1910, in the Golden Era of illustration and postcard design. Most of them were printed in Germany, where the quality of printing was the best in the world, and later imported to the USA or Great Britain.

Presented postcard designs are in the Public Domain according to the 'artist +70 years' rule. They are also out of copyright because they were published before 1923. This simply means you can use them virtually for anything you want, although the provided resolution will probably not be enough for commercial exploitation. But you can, for instance, send them to your friends by e-mail or publish them on your social profiles or blog. In this case, a backlink to this webpage would be greatly appreciated. Hundreds of hours were spent on finding material, editing it, checking the resources, etc. But it's not a must. It's up to you and your goodwill.

Shall we start?

Vintage Picture Cards by Samuel Schmucker

Samuel Schmucker developed a unique recognizable style as a fusion of many influences. Yet, if we have to choose one only, it's Art Nouveau. Art Nouveau's asymmetry, strong colors, floral patterns, and curvy lines are obvious in the first series of presented Christmas cards by Schmucker.

We can immediately notice that classic Christmas themes were not necessarily dominating the image. Instead, the artist opted for a beautiful lady (his by far most frequent model was his wife) and infused Christmas symbolism throughout recognizable red colors or plants, like holy or poinsettia, to achieve the aestheticism of Art Nouveau.

These, without doubt, are the most typical Christmas postcards by Samuel Schmucker and the most valuable among collectors. Of course, he created different kinds of picture cards for Christmas, probably much more recognizable to the average contemporary eye.

Old Christmas Postcards with Children

Children are obviously the most popular Christmas theme. They enjoy the magic time so much even the most hardened old men wish to transform into kids at least for the holiday season.

Kids are also the most active during Christmas. They go sledding, ice skating, sledding, rolling snowballs, building snowmen, singing Christmas carols, decorating the Chrtistmas trees, and many exchanging their first kisses with their peers.

Samuel Schmucker was very skillful at using red and green in combination with other Christmas colors. White for snow, yellow and gold for sun, and blue for tranquility were his favorite additions to the palette.

If something doesn't go according to the plans, kids may even cry a little bit. But just a little bit!

Schmucker's Christmas Picture Cards with Santa

Santa Claus was not so popular a century ago as he is today, but Schmucker created a few Christmas greeting cards with this jolly good fellow, too.

We have three examples in portrait format and two in landscape.

That's all. We hope you find this post useful. Share Schmucker's Christmas greetings with your friends and spread the Christmas joy!
